CHILDREN from a primary school saw their school field transformed into an art studio during a visit from an artist.

Dan Walls, of Illumination Wall Art, helped year six pupils at Etherley Lane Primary School, in Bishop Auckland, express their artistic talents with a day of legal graffiti painting.

The visit was prompted by the children's learning and celebrated the end of a topic.

The class have been reading Scribbleboy – a story based on a young graffiti artist.

Teachers Ashleigh Summerson and Aaron Soulsby were teaching the children about the art form and the legalities and moral issues surrounding graffiti.

Mr Soulsby said: "The children have absolutely loved it.

"It has been so successful we are hoping to carry on with the topic next year as the children have never done anything like this before."

The children – with help from Mr Walls – created a 2019 leavers design on pallet wrap stretched between two trees.

Mr Walls said: "I wanted to do something involving the community.

"It was good to let the kids experiment with art and show them that having a go and being creative is more important than having a perfect result. The kids have been really interested in the artwork."

The artist has recently opened a legal graffiti wall in Bishop Auckland – named the Bish Vegas Legal Graff.

He is looking for paint donations and other artists to get involved in the project.
