A COMMUNITY was transported to wartime Britain over the weekend.

The event, in Barnard Castle, recreated the sights and sounds that would have familiar to people in and around the town during the Second World War.

It started on Friday and ran until Sunday, with re-enactors, who commemorate the 1940s, travelling from across the country to take part.

The high street was transformed with red, white and blue bunting and banners and people walked around in clothes and uniforms of the day.

The event included vehicles from the period and saw people working in the Battle of Britain operations room.

On the Sunday there was a blank firing test, evacuee sing-a-long and camp fire songs, as well as a mystery coach tour.

The highlight for many was the 1940s dance at the Witham on Saturday night.

There was also be a flea market in Scartop Methodist Church to buy and sell items from the 1940s, while St Mary’s Parish Hall hosted a vintage fair.
