THREE people were taken to hospital after a late-night crash which caused major delays on the motorway.

Emergency services were called to deal with a two vehicle collision on the A1 northbound carriageway near Durham, at about 10.50pm yesterday (Tuesday).

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: "The driver of a Vauxhall Corsa suffered head and back injuries and the driver and passenger of a Volkswagon Golf suffered minor injuries.

"All three were taken to University Hospital of North Durham."

It is understood that the road was closed between junction 62 at Carville and junction 63 at Chester-le-Street for around three hours whilst police, fire brigade and ambulance crews attended and for the vehicles and debris to be removed from the scene.

Traffic on the motorway faced major delays as a result of the incident.

Accident investigators from the force have appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
