AN officer was punched in the face and a knife was seized when police were called to a violent disturbance on Tuesday night.

The fight involving a group of men broke out at around 8.15pm on Mansfield Avenue in Thornaby.

Cleveland Police attended the scene and arrested three men in connection with the incident.

Whilst officers were arresting the men, one of them reportedly assaulted a police officer by punching her in the face.

A man, 58, was arrested on suspicion of affray, another man, 26, was arrested on suspicion of affray, being in the possession of drugs and an offensive weapon and a third male aged 21, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

Chief Superintendent Alison Jackson said: “Our officer was taken to hospital where she was treated for facial injuries and later discharged.

“I would like to commend her for her bravery and thank her for her hard work and dedication in her role as she is an absolute credit to Cleveland Police.

“Under no circumstances should Police Officers be assaulted whilst on duty and behaviour of this type will not be tolerated. Anyone committing any offences against our staff will be held to account for their actions.”

Following the incident police will continue to patrol the area of Mansfield Avenue whilst enquiries continue.
