A COLOURFUL parade of wild animals, peace-loving hippies and popular children’s characters took to the streets for an annual parade.

People lined the streets of Barnard Castle to watch the Meet parade as it made its way through the town yesterday.

Groups of school children, families and clubs from the area took part in the popular event, which was led by Barnard Castle Band and featured entries as varied as Mr Bean and characters from the Wizard of Oz, a menagerie of wild animals, chimney sweeps and some young jockeys and their steeds.

Organiser Lesley Taylor said: "We had a good day.

The Northern Echo:

"We had a good parade - it went really well and the rain held off."

The event had been in doubt in the run-up due to a shortage of volunteers but about 20 people stepped forward to make sure there were enough stewards to manage road closures.

This year's Meet was a smaller affair than last year, with events including a pet show, car treasure hunt and quiz.
