A THRIVING housing association is holding open days at two of its North-East properties, and prospective tenants are invited to attend.

believe housing, previously County Durham Housing Group before relaunching in April of this year, is encouraging anyone wanting to access social housing to visit one of its upcoming open days.

Events will be held in Kelloe at 32 Ann Avenue, DH6 4NF on Wednesday May 22, and in Shotton at 55 Bruce Glasier Terrace, DH6 2PJ, on Wednesday, May 29. Housing officers will be on-hand between 11am and 5pm to give tours, and to offer helpful advice.

Head of Housing Operations, Simon Bartlett, said: “As a non-profit organisation our outlook is very different from the private housing sector. People often think the only way to access social housing is to get your name on a list and wait, but we offer several different avenues to help you find a home.”

With properties throughout County Durham, in an area covering more than 800 square miles, there are plenty of diverse housing options to choose from. believe housing’s homes range from quiet, rural locations like Rookhope, in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, to busier settings like Durham city centre.

Mr Bartlett added: “We don’t charge any bonds or admin fees, and with our immediately available properties, you could receive the keys to your new home within a day.

“But once you have your keys, you’re not on your own. We offer support on all a whole host of areas like money management, and how to access employability and training opportunities, to make sure our customers are fully equipped to make a success of their new home.

“We also provide a 24-hour repairs service and practical help to all tenants, including how to access affordable furnishings and white goods.”

believe housing has also launched a shared tenancy scheme, designed to provide an alternative option to shared houses in the private sector.

Mr Bartlett said: “We looked for alternatives to help more people to benefit from a secure and affordable home. We realised, like in other parts of the country, not all people could afford a whole property all on their own.

“We believe that social housing should be a positive force for change and by offering a range of housing solutions we hope to achieve that.”
