THE Durham Choral Society are preparing to perform Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at Durham Cathedral.
The talents of regular accompanist, Alison Gill and her concert partner Yoshie Kawamura, will be showcased when they open the concert with a performance of Rachmaninov’s Suite No2. Op 17 (for two pianos) at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 18.
Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle is scored for two pianos and harmonium and was originally intended for a salon in a Parisian townhouse, rather than a church.
The singers will be conducted by Michael Summers when they perform the work, featuring soprano Elizabeth Roberts, mezzo Susanna Spicer, tenor Ben Thapa and bass Christopher Foster, with accompaniment on harmonium by Andrew Christer.
This is a great opportunity to hear the instrument outside of the traditional chapel setting. The instrument has a grand history of supporting worship throughout 19th and 20th century, especially in the coal mining towns of our region.
