A MAN arrested for carrying a metal baseball bat in public was told to expect a prison sentence on his return to court.

The warning was given to Gordon Nicholson, at Durham Crown Court after a judge agreed to adjourn sentence for preparation of medical and background probation reports on him.

Magistrates previously committed the case to the crown court after Nicholson, 30, of Rowan Place, Newton Aycliffe, admitted possessing an offensive weapon in public, said to have taken place on January 30 this year.

Judge Christopher Prince bailed Nicholson to return for sentence on April 26, but told him: “You should expect to receive an immediately effective custodial sentence.”
