YOUNGSTERS have taken part in the first pancake race to be held at one of the North-East’s most historic venues.

Durham Cathedral staged the Shrove Tuesday event in the cloisters yesterday with a relay race involving children, staff and clergy.

Teams had to run the length of a quadrant and flip a pancake into the next person’s pan before they could continue to the next stage.

The winning team was treated to a stack of pancakes in the cathedral café.

The event was organised by Canon Chancellor Charlie Allen and involved around 15 pupils from The Chorister School.

The winning team was led by Katie Dyer, a development assistant at Durham Cathedral.

She said: “I love a bit of healthy competition so it was great fun to join with colleagues from across the cathedral and chorister school pupils for the first Durham Cathedral pancake flipping race.

“My team were delighted to win and it was the cherry on top of the (pan)cake to claim our prize in the Undercroft restaurant.

“I went for apple and cinnamon, while the younger members of the team enjoyed chocolate and golden syrup on theirs.

“It was crepe-tacular.”
