WARNINGS have been flashed to owners of keyless entry cars after a spate of thefts.

Thieves are targetting Ford Fiesta and Focus ST and ST-Line specifically, say police.

Four of nine vehicles taken have been recovered by police, however Cleveland Police are now issuing crime prevention advice in a bid to crackdown on the thefts.

Cleveland Police Staff Investigator Sarah Hamilton said: “We are seeing a pattern whereby Fiesta and Focus ST and ST-Lines are being targeted in the Middlesbrough area.

Ford Focus ST Line - one of the cars targeted by thieves

"We are carrying out a number of enquiries to try to trace those responsible, but, as we continue to do this we would like to remind members of the public of some of the steps they could take which could help prevent them from becoming victims of crime, such as using steering locks and Faraday bags to keep their keyless fobs in.”

Police are asking drivers with keyless entry cars, including Fiesta and Focus owners, to consider crime prevention advice:

  • A good quality disc steering lock which is Thatcham-approved is a visual deterrent to a thief
  • Ask your car dealer about the digital features in your vehicle. Have there been any software updates you can take advantage of
  • Check if your keyless entry fob can be turned off at night and do so if possible. Your car dealer will be able to confirm this
  • Store your fob in a Secured by Design approved key shield. Keeping your fob out of sight is not enough. Consider purchasing a fob blocking bag, such as a Faraday bag.
  • When parking your vehicle consider using a car park with the Safer Parking Award, signified by a blue tick symbol. When returning to your car, be aware of your surroundings and who is hanging around
  • Ensure your car is locked, all windows are shut and all valuables are removed before leaving your vehicle unattended
  • Be vigilant and keep an eye out for suspicious activity in your neighbourhood and report anything unusual to police on 101, or 999 in an emergency

Anyone who may have information regarding the thefts can contact Police Staff Investigator Sarah Hamilton from Middlesbrough Operational Crime Team on the non-emergency number 101.
