A MAN has been arrested following reports that a number of women were sprayed with an unknown substance in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police received a total of nine reports this week from women claiming to have been sprayed with an unknown substance by a man on a pedal cycle.

Today, officers have arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of common assault. He is in custody, assisting officers with the investigation.

Chief Inspector Steve Wykes, of Northumbria Police, said: “It is understandable that reports of this nature can cause concern among members of the public, and I’d like to reassure the community that a full investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

“Early reports suggest the liquid in question may be liquid soap, rather than any kind of noxious substance. We are taking these reports very seriously and a man has been arrested in connection with the investigation. Our enquiries will continue.”

Anyone who has concerns about the incidents can contact police on 101.
