THE southbound carriageway of the A19 was closed for more than an hour on Tuesday following an accident involving two vehicles.

The accident happened between the A174 (Thornaby) and A67 (Crathorne Junction, Kirklevington) where one of the vehicles was reported to have overturned.

Diversions were put in place but the accident caused major tailbacks. Police, fire and ambulance crews all attended the scene. The road has now reopened.

Highways England tweeted at 11.38am: "With the assistance from Cleveland Police all vehicles have now been removed. The A19 southbound between the A174 and the A67 is now open, delays in the area should clear shortly."

It is not known if anyone was injured.
