A FORMER leader of one of the region's biggest councils has died.

The Labour Party's Sunderland branch confirmed last night that Bob Symonds, who led Sunderland City Council for five years until 2008, had passed away.

In a statement, a spokesperson said: "It is with sadness that we mark the passing of former Sunderland City Council Leader, Councillor Bob Symonds.

"Bob worked hard for our city both as a councillor and as council leader.

"He was a proud member of the Labour Party, well known in Castle Ward and a popular figure with many, many people.

"Bob was a strong advocate for our city and fought our corner regionally, nationally and internationally.

"Our deepest sympathies go to his family."

Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott has this morning tweeted: "So sad to learn of the passing former councillor Bob Symonds – he led the council with distinction for many years but more importantly he was a thoroughly decent man.

"My thoughts are with his family at this very sad time."

Mr Symonds was awarded an OBE last year for his services to education in the city, as chairman of WISE Academies Trust.
