A REPORTED police chase ended with suspects crashing into other vehicles before smashing into a phone box and overturning their vehicle.

On Wednesday evening, witnesses said they saw motorists in a black Fiat Punto being pursued by officers before the car crashed into a phone box and flipped onto its roof.

Two men were arrested following the incident, which happened off Elwick Road in Hartlepool at around 5.30pm and sparked a large police response, with several officers in a number of marked vehicles rushing to the scene.

Paramedics and a crew from the Great North Air Ambulance Service also attended, with a spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service later saying that two people had been taken to the University Hospital of North Tees.

Their injuries were not thought to be serious.

Elwick Road and Arncliffe Gardens were temporarily closed to allow Cleveland Police officers to carry out investigations at the scene.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said that the men – one aged 18 and the other aged 26 - were arrested on suspicion of driving and drug offences.They remain in custody.
