A CHRISTMAS wish has been granted for a 101-year-old woman who wanted to be whisked back to her motorcycling days.

The team at The Terrace residential home in Richmond runs a Wishing Tree initiative to help make residents’ wishes come true.

When they saw that Mary Sutherst's Christmas wish was to ride on the back of a motorbike - just like one she used to ride when she was younger - the staff set about trying to make it happen.

The team worked with Mary’s family to find a similar motorbike to the one she used in the Women’s Royal Air Force (WRAF) in her youth.

Amazingly, they managed to track down a vintage 1927 Triumph to make her dream come true.

Mary was delighted to find the motorbike at the home and spent the day exploring the bike, honking the horn and pretending to ride.

She also spent hours recalling her time in the WRAF and talking about the different motorbikes she used to ride all over the country.

The Terrace’s home manager, Nicola Wilkins, said: “Residents are at the heart of everything we do here at The Terrace, and we always like to go the extra mile to grant their wishes.

"I am really pleased that we were able to make Mary’s dream a reality.

“Mary had a wonderful day, and you could see from her reaction just how amazed and fascinated she was to experience a vintage 1927 motorbike again.

"It was fantastic to see how engaged she was and to hear the wonderful biking stories from her younger years.

“I’d like to say a massive thank you to Mary’s family for helping us grant the wish.

"We’re looking forward to making another wish come true soon.”

The Terrace is home to residents who need full-time residential care.
