A VETERAN UFC fighter has saved the day stepping into a cage match in aid of charity.

The Made4TheCage match was set to see charity founder Mark Solan take on Robert ‘Buzz’ Berry in a David verses Goliath match.

Mr Solan of Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust was intensively training for the fight when he broke his ankle and tore the cartilage in his knee.

He said: “The injury has been really painful but I’m hoping in the future I’ll be able to fight Robert ‘Buzz’ Berry as it would be a fantastic event.

“The night is all about raising awareness and getting it out there that the charity can help anyone touched by cancer.”

The new line-up will see UFC veteran Curt Warburton face amateur fighter Liam Webstell – who has been training in Thailand for the past five weeks.

Mr Warburton said: “I’ve known Mark for a number of years and really wanted to support all the work he and the charity do, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.”

The event takes place tomorrow night at Rainton Meadows Arena in Houghton-le-Spring.
