AN inmate has appeared in court accused of assaults on prison staff, including throwing excrement at a custody officer.

Sean Richard Daniel Baker is charged with two counts of administering a poison or noxious substance with intent to injure, relating to incidents at Frankland Prison, near Durham, in August and December last year.

He is also accused of two counts of assaulting a prison custody officer, on January 28 this year.

The 31-year-old defendant, originally from Bristol, gave no plea when appearing at Durham Crown Court, over video link from Whitemoor Prison, in Cambridgeshire.

His case was adjourned until Wednesday November 28 to allow his barrister, Peter Sabiston, to have a conference and seek full instruction from his client before pleas are entered.
