AN inquest has opened into the death of a 21-year-old man who died after falling into a canal in Amsterdam.
Daniel Norman Sirrell, from Peterlee, was on holiday with a group of friends in May before his death.
The talented young footballer, who played for Harton and Westoe FC in South Shields, fell into the Kloveniersburgwal canal in Amsterdam.
He was taken to hospital after the incident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday, May 20 but later died.
An inquest into his death opened at Crook Coroner’s Court today.
Assistant coroner Tannyka Rawden heard a post mortem examination, which was carried out at the University Hospital of North Durham, gave the cause of death as drowning and immersion in water in a canal.
The inquest was adjourned until a later date.
