A TEENAGER has been handed a prestigious award by an organisation continuing the legacy of Princess Diana.

Jake Mendelsohn, 15, of Newton Aycliffe, received the Diana Award for undertaking the Great North Swim two years ago to raise funds for BTRC - in honour of late family friend Anna Swabey.

Established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, it is the most prestigious accolade a young person aged nine to 25 years can receive for social action or humanitarian work.

The Woodham Academy pupil attended a ceremony with family last month in Leeds.

Jake’s mother Ally Mendelsohn said: “It was a lovely event at Leeds College of Music, myself and his dad went, his ten-year-old brother Isaac, his grandma, our cousins from Leicester and Danny Morgans, deputy head from Woodham Academy. The presentation was interspersed with music and it was just such a proud day for all of us.”

Miss Swabey, who died aged 25 in September 2016, launched a successful fund and awareness campaign following a terminal brain tumour diagnosis.
