WHEN Molly Hepworth was born, the First World War was raging and Charlie Chaplin was just starting out.

More than a century later, the war is consigned to history, Chaplin is immortalised in film and Mrs Hepworth celebrated her 104th birthday in style.

Mrs Hepworth, who lives in the Millings Residential Home in Bedale is officially the oldest person in the North Yorkshire market town and she celebrated her birthday at the home surrounded by family and friends.

Born and raised in West Hartlepool, Mrs Hepworth and her late husband Geoffrey retired to North Yorkshire from Edinburgh.

She studied English at Liverpool University where she met her future husband.

The couple married in India where they spent five years before moving to Germany and eventually Scotland.

Mrs Hepworth has two sons and a daughter, four granddaughters, two grandsons, five great granddaughters and three great grandsons.

Mrs Hepworth’s birthday celebrations were also attended by staff at the Millings Residential Home.

The Chairman of Hambleton District Council, Councillor David Blades and Ward Member Councillor John Noone also popped in to wish Mrs Hepworth a happy birthday.

Aside from Mrs Hepworth’s birthday, other notable events from the year 1914 include the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and the installation of the world’s first traffic lights.
