THE North-East could not escape the perils of Storm Calum as the wet and windy conditions forced the cancellation of a food market.

The team at Darlington Market made the decision to postpone the World Food Day Market until October 27 due to the poor weather.

A 'flooding is possible - be aware' warning was issued for the Upper and Lower River Tees and Estuarine Tributaries on Saturday morning.

The flood gates in Yarm were also closed on Saturday, but reopened yesterday once the worst of the weather had passed.

The main areas of concern were low lying land in the Tees Valley, including Teesdale Way footpath at Croft.

That was in response to the rainfall on Friday night and further prolonged and sometimes heavy rainfall throughout Saturday.

The worst of Storm Callum is now after over after it wreaked devastation across parts of the UK over the weekend.

Monday is looking set to be dull and cold with little chance of showers.

A spokesperson for the Flood Warning Information Service said: "No further flooding to fields and roads is expected, however there may be standing water seen for several days.”
