WAR Horse star Joey made a special appearance with the Tommy statue in Seaham ahead of his visit to the Sunderland Empire as part a UK tour next year.

The life-size puppet also posed at Roker Pier and featured at an event at Sunderland Empire, attended by invited groups and schools.

The visit promoted the show’s staging from February 6 to 23, 2019.

War Horse, based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo, is the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey.

The production features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing and galloping horses to life on stage.

War Horse producer Kash Bennett said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be bringing War Horse to Sunderland Empire and hope that with Joey’s appearance in the region, we can bring people in Sunderland and surrounding areas a taste of the theatrical magic and artistry that audiences can look forward to with this very special show.’
