UNDER the light of the moon and a clear sky full of stars, walkers put their best foot forward for a sponsored walk in aid of Butterwick Hospice.

Around 70 people took part in the hospice’s first Moonlight Ribbon walk at Raby Castle near Staindrop, County Durham, on Saturday night.

The 5km route started and finished in the castle’s walled gardens and went through the grounds, woods, farmland and back past the Raby ponds.

Walkers, many decked out in glow-in-the-dark accessories and all carrying torches, enjoyed the crisp autumn evening and could hear stags nearby as it is rutting season.

They also wrote on ribbons messages in memory of lost loved ones or about someone or something close to their heart to wear during the walk or hang on a display as inspiration.

Butterwick Hospice fundraiser Milly Toner said: “It was a lovely night, the weather and the atmosphere were wonderful and everyone seemed to really enjoy the night which is what we wanted.

“I wanted to start a walk event that could become an annual thing, I hope it will continue and grow in future.

“I want to thank all those who took part or made it possible.”

With some sponsorship money still to be handed in or counted up the total raised on the night is not yet known, but expected to exceed £2,000.
