A CHILD with cerebral palsy is one step closer to owning her very first trike thanks to a £500 donation.

Evergreen Primary School student, Katelyn Stacey, from Newton Aycliffe, wanted a trike to play outside with her four brothers and sisters who often go for bike rides.

The family received news of the donation by Angel’s Trust charity ambassador and I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here winner, Scarlett Moffatt.

Scarlett said: “I told Katelyn’s mam we would love to donate towards the trike and it was so nice to see her reaction. She seemed really happy.

“It’s great to see the community come together and support Katelyn as it was the neighbours who posted the appeal on Facebook.

“I’ve got a little sister who’s 12 and I’d like to think if she was in that situation, someone would want to help her as well.

“I love this charity because we’ve got the ability to help right now and we’ve made a difference.”

The Angel’s Trust team wanted to help when they saw a social media appeal created by the community.

The ten-year-old’s mother, Michaela Stacey, looked into the cost of the trike but those meeting Katelyn’s needs cost thousands of pounds.

She said: “We live in an area with a lot of children who are always out on their bikes and I think Katelyn wanted to be a part of that.

“She loved seeing Scarlett today because she’s an avid watcher of I’m a Celebrity and loves reality TV.

“We’d like to thank Scarlett and the Angel Trust so much because they’ve given us a huge donation towards the trike and now we’re so much closer to reaching our goal.

“The donation is really important because she’s been diagnosed with epilepsy in the last two weeks so we need to make sure the trike is fully supported.”

Epilepsy is a common condition that affects the brain and causes frequent seizures.

Ms Stacey said she was in shock when the TV star rang her off her neighbours phone as she had been a fan of Miss Moffatt after seeing her on Gogglebox.

She wanted to thank her neighbours for the support they had given the family for drawing attention to the cause and running the social media appeal.

The Angel Trust is a charity for the local people of Darlington and County Durham.

It works to support individuals and organisations in the community by providing financial support and services to those in need.

The organisation’s chief executive, Clair McGregor said: “We really wanted to help when we saw the Facebook Post.

“It was fantastic, Scarlett rang the family up off the cuff without being asked.

“They were thrilled and they didn’t believe it was her at first, It was a lovely surprise and the donation will really make a difference in their lives.

“We’ve donated the money as we’re working to support families and people in this area and we thought this would really help Katelyn and her family.

The organisation runs event to help local families and is preparing for a Halloween Quiz & Curry Night.
