A MAN who was hit by a lorry on the A1 when he got out of his car on Thursday evening is still critical in hospital.

Police want to piece together exactly what happened and are asking for any witnesses with dashcam footage who were in the area at about 10.30pm.

The driver of the Mini Clubman was hit just below the junction 58 interchange at Burtree, near Darlington.

He was initially in the car, which collided with both the nearside and offside crash barrier, in a crash involving only his vehicle.

He then got out of the vehicle and was struck by an HGV also travelling southbound.

The man, who lives locally, received serious injuries and remains in hospital.

Any witnesses or any motorists with dashcam footage who may have recorded the Mini Clubman at or around the collision are asked to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 0191-375-2159 or Durham Police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference DHM-27092018-0476.
