THE eyes of the cycling world will be on Yorkshire next year when the county hosts the 2019 Road World Championships.

For nine days some of the world's best cyclists will converge on the region for the prestigious event.

But while some are looking forward to the racing, which takes place between September 21 and 29, others are not convinced the outlay and disruption it will inevitably bring will be worth it.

The races all finish in Harrogate with starts in key places such as Bradford, Leeds and Doncaster.

However, interest locally will peak when the event comes to Richmond, Northallerton and Ripon. Ripon holds the Men Under 23 Individual Time Trial and Women Elite Individual Time Trial on September 24, followed by Northallerton's hosting of the Men Elite Individual Time Trial on September 25. Richmond has been chosen as the start of the Men Junior Road Race on September 26.

Julia Robinson, manager of the Northallerton Business Improvement District, said: “Despite some local disruption with road closures, local businesses are very proud of our town and will work with all partners to ensure Northallerton looks its best when we are featured around the world at the start of this prestigious race.

“The world will be watching, so you can expect a great turnout in the county town!”

Steve Cowley, owner of Cowley Cycles in the town's Zetland Street, said: “This is the biggest sporting event Northallerton has ever seen and we are thrilled to be hosting the World Cycling Championships in North Yorkshire’s county town.

"To have so many of the world’s biggest stars on our doorstep will be truly inspirational.

“Not only will the championships bring huge tourism benefits for Northallerton, a high-profile event of this kind will encourage many more people to take up cycling and enjoy all the health benefits that brings.”

However, Marcia McLuckie, Richmond Business and Tourism Association, remains to be convinced of the lasting benefits of hosting the event.

She said the association would address the Championships at its next meeting and would come up with a plan of action to make the most from it. But speaking in personal capacity, she thought the money spent in hosting the racing could be put to better use.
