A NORTH-East independent school is opening a sister venue in Qatar.

Durham School for Girls Doha is set to open in September 2019.

It will become the first school in the North-East to open a sister school overseas.

Headteacher Kieran McLaughlin said: “This is a hugely exciting development for Durham School but also for the educational environment in the Middle East.

“It is the realisation of a shared ambition for us to build on our 600-year heritage and that of our Qatari partners, who seek to create a learning environment in which girls, whilst rooted in their national culture, become ready to take their place in modern 21st century society.

“We are proud to be the first independent school in the North East to open a sister school overseas. We believe it says a great deal about our ambition and confidence to reach out to a wider community. We are hugely excited about the opportunity as we begin a new chapter in the school’s history.”

The school will be in the Al Messila region of the city.

It will open as a primary school, offering the UK curriculum, and will grow year-on-year towards IGCSEs and A-levels.
