MEMBERS of a junior football team have won a glittering haul of silverware in a remarkable first season.

The 11 trophies claimed by Durham City Juniors include winning the North-East Championships, which involved 250 teams competing over two days.

The teams were put into groups of seven and Durham City Juniors beat Tekkers North East 4-1 in the final.

The team of under-sevens, who play in the Russell Foster League on a Saturday, only got together in April and have become good friends on and off the pitch.

Over the summer, the team has entered 12 tournaments and walked away with 11 trophies, included the Junior World Cup, in which they were chosen to play as England and beat Germany in the final 2-1.

Durham City coach Steve Reynolds said: “I have worked with a lot of these boys from the age of four and to see how well they have come on in such a short space is incredible. It was a great team effort by all boys to win the North-East Championships. They conducted themselves well and were a credit to Durham City.”

Mr Reynolds also paid tribute to the players’ parents for their “dedication, support and time”.

Most of the players have already been invited to train with some of the region’s top academies, including Newcastle United, Sunderland AFC and Middlesbrough. Some of the players have been invited to train with all three.

The same team members have now entered the Pin Point League on a Sunday under the name Newcastle City Juniors.
