A RUNNER who was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson’s disease has helped raise more than £4,000 for charity.

Andrew Deane, 37, a doctor from Framwellgate Moor, Durham, took part in the Great North Run to raise money for Parkinson’s UK.

Running alongside teammates James Fisher and Michael Sen, they have now raised almost £4,500 for the charity.

Mr Deane, who had done the half marathon three times before, while dressed as Star Wars characters, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s last December.

He said: “I have done lots of half marathons but this was the toughest given the heat. The atmosphere was amazing and the support definitely got me to the finish line.

“I am so proud of my team that have raised over £4000 for this great charity to support those affected by Parkinson’s and fund vital research.

“We definitely want to come again next year.”

Among the symptoms Mr Deane experiences are right side stiffness, particularly in his hip and ankle, which make it difficult to run.
