A MOPED rider has died in a crash in York this weekend.

The 48-year-old man had been driving on the A59 Boroughbridge Road, in the Acomb area of York, when he was involved in a collision as he travelled towards the city’s outer ring road.

A passing local fire crew stopped to help the man, at about 5.30am on Saturday morning (September 8) but despite their efforts the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire crew from Acomb had been making their way back from another incident when they came across the moped in the road.

Police and ambulance crews also attended the scene.

The silver-coloured Piaggio moped was the only vehicle involved in the collision, which happened near the junction with Plantation Drive.

The road was closed for five hours while officers from the Roads Policing Group and Forensic Collision Investigation Unit conducted examinations at the scene.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the collision, seen the vehicle prior to the collision, or have dashcam footage of the incident, to contact the North Yorkshire Police Major Collision Investigation Team on 101, quoting the incident reference number 12180168057.
