A MAN has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after an early morning assault.

At around 2.10am on Saturday, police were called by the ambulance service to reports of an incident in which a 31–year-old man had been assaulted near The Roundhouse pub, in Newton Aycliffe town centre.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance having suffered injuries described as “serious and possibly life-threatening.”

Officers are following up a number of inquiries including examining CCTV footage from the area.

Detective sergeant Deborah Lonsdale, of Bishop Auckland CID, said: “This was a particularly violent assault and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed what happened to get in touch with us”.

Police cordoned off part of Stephenson Way, near the pub known locally as the DL5, while forensic officers examined the scene.
