HUNDREDS of motocross riders and spectators will honour one of the sport’s brightest stars this weekend.

Family, friends and fans of late motocross star, Thomas Brown, will gather at Haverigg in Cumbria today and tomorrow for a memorial event at Route 44 - Thomas Brown The People’s Track, a course renamed and revamped in his memory.

The Thomas Brown Memorial Weekend will pay tribute to the 27-year-old, from Barnard Castle, who died following an accident at a practice event near Sedgefield, County Durham, in April 2017.

Mr Brown, had been a regular visitor to the Haverigg track for many years and had friends and followers across the UK through his sport and his work for Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd, of Ulverston.

In the months following his death, Mr Brown’s family and friends set up the Thomas Brown Memorial Fund to enable them to run memorial events.

The family, the TB44 committee and friends raise awareness of practice track safety, and encourage the presence of medics and equipment at practice events.

Through funds raised, Mr Brown’s circle have been able to make donations to the North West Air Ambulance and put money into redeveloping Route 44 - which carries Mr Brown’s race number.

The memorial weekend is hosted by the MCF and Cumbria MX Club and will feature races across both days, an after party tonight and an auction.

A spokesperson for Mr Brown’s family said: “Safety is paramount to us so please follow the tracks rules and guidelines. We hope everyone has a great weekends racing and does Thomas proud on Saturday night at the party, without all of you this weekend wouldn’t happen. Remember work hard, but play harder, love from The Browns.”

Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd said it is proud to be the event's main sponsor as he was a valued member of its team.

This is the second Thomas Brown Memorial Weekend, the first was last September.
