A CHAIN of convenience stores will spend the next 12 months raising money for an animal welfare charity.

Lakes & Dales Co-operative, which has nine shops in County Durham, Cumbria and Northumberland, has chosen the RSPCA as its new charity of the year.

The partnership also aims to increase awareness of the charity's work, with a particular focus on educating children and adults on animal welfare.

Planned fundraising activities by staff include bake sales, sponsored dog walks and triathlons. Lakes & Dales committee member John Mills said: “It is a cause that resonates with our staff, members and customers.”

Sarah Colberg, senior corporate partnerships manager at RSPCA, said the support will help the RSPCA continue rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming tens of thousands of animals in need.

“Importantly it will help us to educate and raise awareness to improve animal welfare too. It is exciting to see the enthusiasm from Lakes & Dales staff to get started and I would like to take this opportunity thank everyone for their support," she said.
