A SIXTH form graduate is working hard to raise thousands of pounds to enable him to teach in Sri Lanka.

Max Ashman, a former student at Thirsk School and Sixth Form College, is taking a year away from his studies to teach English in south Asia.

He is fundraising hard to raise the £5,500 needed to spend eight months in Sri Lanka, where he will help in a secondary school.

The 18-year-old, of Pickhill, near Thirsk, is undertaking his gap year with Project Trust, an educational charity which places volunteers overseas.

“I’m really excited at the thought of going to the other side of the world and experiencing a different culture,” said Max, who passed three A levels in biology, psychology and history.

“It helps that I will be doing some good while I’m out there – I won’t be just hotel hopping.”
