THE demolition of Corporation Hall on Stockton’s Prince Regent Street is now underway.
Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council began initial work in the past few weeks to take down the building which was outdated and carried high maintenance costs.
The resulting site will offer major development potential and is set to be used as a 24-space car park while regeneration options are considered.
Councillor Bob Cook, Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, said: “Corporation Hall has stood vacant for quite a number of years now and its demolition is part of our broader plan to remove unused sites that are in poor condition, including the former Glam nightclub and post office sites, with an ambition to regenerate them back into active use at an appropriate time.
“The new car park being built in the meantime will provide 24 more short stay spaces for visitors to easily access and enjoy all that Stockton town centre has to offer including its wide range of independent retailers, traditional and specialist markets, fantastic events programme, cafes, restaurants and live music venues.”
