A CELEBRATED folk musician will be honoured at a County Durham town’s annual festival.

Tributes will be paid at next week’s Sedgefield Folk Festival to Bert Draycott, who triumphed countless times at the World Spoons Championships, at Sedgefield Folk Festival. The former miner, of Fishburn, staged workshops at the festival and died last year at the age of 86.

Instead of the usual championships and workshops, festival organisers have this year arranged a tribute.

Ray Thom will lead Memories of Bert after a singalong at Ceddesfeld Hall on Saturday, September 1.

He will share anecdotes and the humour of the festival stalwart.

There will also be a tribute to another late festival favourite Martin Nesbitt.

Michael James Ward will present some of the singer songwriter’s popular pieces and comedy.

Joan Edmondson, organiser, said: “They were important festival regulars and we just wanted to honour the memories of both of their men.”

Sedgefield Folk Festival will run Friday, August 31, to Sunday, September 2, across a number of venues in the town. Topping the bill this year is Marty Craggs with his Unexpected Visitors, Jez Lowe and Real Time.
