A FOOTBALL writer is challenging himself to ten runs to mark the tenth anniversary of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

George Caulkin is a patron of the charity and has so far raised more than £3,000 after completing seven of the runs.

Mr Caulkin, who went to the same school as Sir Bobby – Langley Park Infants, in County Durham – has taken part in the London Big Half, the Paris Marathon, London Marathon, Sunderland City Half Marathon, the Great Manchester Run, the Blaydon Race and the Northumberland Coastal Run.

Next month, he is taking part in the Great North Run, ahead of the Kielder Half Marathon in October and finishing with the New York Marathon in November.

He said: "Mentally and physically, there have been some real highs and lows and I’ve been fretting about calf and knee problems, but I’m determined to get through it.

"Getting into New York is incredible and nerve-wracking, but the thought of representing Bobby there is very special. I’m so grateful for all the support and sponsorship. It means everything.”

When he finishes his challenge, he will have completed 164 race miles and more than 1,000 training miles.

Lady Elsie said: “We’re very lucky to have George as a patron and we’re extremely proud of him.

“His passion for the work we fund is always apparent. I know he’s putting his heart and soul into this running challenge, as he does with everything for our foundation.

“We wish George and all our wonderful Great North Runners all the very best with their final couple of weeks training. My family will be at the finish of the run to say thank you and to make sure everyone gets a well-deserved cup of tea.”
