POLICE say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of man, who was discovered injured in the centre of York.

The man, aged in his sixties, was found on a street off Piccadilly in the city in the early hours of Wednesday, August 22.

Police were called by the ambulance service at about 4.30am on Wednesday morning after members of the public came across an injured man outside Tesco in Piccadilly in York.

Despite the efforts of members of the public and medical staff at the scene, he was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

They say they are not looking for anyone in connection with the man’s death and do not believe he died in suspicious circumstances.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "Despite the efforts of members of the public and medical staff at the scene, the man was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

"An investigation is underway to determine how the man came to be injured and subsequently died."

For most of Wednesday, Merchantgate was cordoned off at both ends of the street - at its junctions with Piccadilly and Fossgate - and scene guards were put in place.

Once officers had completed their examination of the scene, the road was reopened just after 3pm.

Buses were diverted along an alternative route and temporary bus stops put in place on Piccadilly.

The examination of the scene is now complete, and the street has now reopened.

Officers are in the process of contacting the man's next of kin. They will also prepare a report for the coroner.
