A ROAD which had to be closed due to subsidence has reopened and will undergo further remedial work next month.

Dial Stob Hill, between Bishop Auckland and Binchester, was closed on Friday due to land slippage caused by erosion from the River Wear which it runs alongside.

Durham County Council had already planned to carry out work on the road, which leads off Bishop Auckland Market Place and passes Binchester Roman Fort, this summer.

When the damage was reported last week, the council made an emergency closure of the route and repair work to reopen it was completed by Monday.

John Reed, Durham County Council’s head of technical services, said: “The roadside is subject to subsidence and erosion from the river which is having an impact on the carriageway.

“Work to stabilise the riverbanks was already planned to start on 16 July.

“However, due to further subsidence we had to carry out some emergency works last week which required closing the road.

“We were able to reopen the road on Monday and are anticipating no further works until the planned scheme in July.”
