A NATIONAL chain has confirmed it is to occupy an abandoned Darlington retail space in a much-needed boost for the town centre.

Discount retailer B&M will take over the former BHS store on Northgate, which closed in 2016.

Bosses say the store will open in August and create 35 new jobs.

B&M already has another store in Darlington based on Meynell Road, which will not be affected by the new shop.

A spokesperson from B&M said: “We’re feeling really positive about the creation of even more jobs for local people and we hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.

“We are all really excited to get the doors open and welcome our new customers through the door in a few weeks.”

The news is welcome boost to the town centre, following the announcement that House of Fraser is closing its doors at the opposite end of the town.
