A MAN who was shot by police in Bishop Auckland has appeared in court.

Samuel John Houlihan, who turned 24 today, appeared in the dock at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court charged with one count of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Wearing a grey jumper and trousers, the defendant, of Linburn Drive, Bishop Auckland, entered no plea and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

During the ten minute hearing, Mr Houlihan’s solicitor Peter Hamill made no bail application.

Paul Anderson, prosecuting, outlined the details of the case which alleges the defendant was carrying a SIG SAUER P226 gas powered air weapon, based on a real handgun, with the intent to cause persons present to believe that unlawful violence would be used against another.

The court heard he was on bail for another offence which he was due to appear in court in relation to on June 21.

He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Durham Crown Court on Wednesday, June 27.

Mr Houlihan was shot in the arm by police near to The Masons Arms pub in Etherley Dene, Bishop Auckland, on Friday.

He was admitted to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was arrested on release.

At the hearing he showed no visible signs of pain from his arm.

His left cheekbone and jaw was bruised but he wore no sling and his hands were cuffed.
