Champions for three of the last four years, Murton are back in the title frame after a vital win which saw them leapfrog two of their rivals to move ominously closer to leaders, Castle Eden.

The Castle were surprisingly held to a draw by bottom club Peterlee, while Murton not only beat one of their title rivals, Bill Quay, but ended their unbeaten record which was the last to go in the league.

Murton's victory by seven wickets was impressive, having dismissed them for just 89 with Lee Gilbert (6-25) and Joe Dodd (4-33) doing the damage.

Calvin Stephenson, with an unbeaten 65, cemented the success, which takes them to within striking distance of the leaders with a game in hand.

Silksworth can't be discounted as late challengers after a win at Dawdon moved them into third place, just a couple of points behind Murton.

They had Paul Smailes (75) and George Bevan (62) to thank for posting 175 for five before Stephen Wright (6-60) put Dawdon's batsmen to the test. Only Anthony Watson, who made 48, came through with distinction.

Castle Eden found Peterlee in determined mood after they responded to a target of 203-3 with 119-7.

John Malkin (64) and John Spellman junior (56 not out) put the Castle in control.

But Dale Butler (40) and David Watt (32) showed no fears, despite four wickets for Tony Banks, to save the game for Peterlee, who have yet to win this season.

Boldon had an excellent win over Seaham Park with Tommy Nixon (6-54) and Gary Critchley (76 not out) sharing the honours.

Ryhope's draw at Easington provided further proof that David Kennedy (62) and Alan Purewal (59) are among the best opening partnerships in the league.
