THERESA May has pledged to look at introducing a graduated licensing scheme for young drivers.

The pledge came as Labour MP Jenny Chapman told MPs that one in four young drivers was involved in an accident within the first two years of starting to drive.

The Darlington MP, speaking during Prime Minister’s Questions, urged Mrs May to look at introducing a graduated scheme which would allow new drivers to build up their skills and experience gradually - in well-defined, structured stages.

She said: “With one in four young drivers being involved in an accident within the first two years of starting to drive and 400 deaths or serious injuries on our roads involving young drivers each year, will the Prime Minister meet with me and my constituents to hear their story and consider the introduction of a graduated licensing system for the UK as they have in other countries?”

Mrs May said: “I will certainly look at the request that she has made and I will also ask the Department for Transport to look at at this issue. As she says, there are too many people who suffer a loss and tragedy at the hands of learner drivers and we will certainly look at that.”
