A STUDENT is under investigation after a teacher was injured with a pair of scissors during a disturbance at a college.
Police were called to Derwentside College, in Consett, following reports a 16-year-old girl was ‘brandishing’ a pair of scissors.
She had been restrained by two members of staff and one woman needed treatment for a cut to her arm.
A police spokesman said: “Durham Constabulary received reports that a student was brandishing a pair of scissors threatening to harm other students at Derwentside College at about 11.05am on January 31.
“A 16-year-old girl was restrained by two members of staff, one of whom was injured by the scissors during this.
“Within five minutes of the original call, officers had arrested the student on suspicion of assault with intent.”
The teenager has been released under investigation and suspended by the college pending further inquiries.
Principal Karen Redhead said: “A member of staff was injured but returned to work later that day.
“We are co-operating fully with the police investigation.”
