TWO men have been arrested following the burglary of an elderly couple’s home.
The burglary happened at a property on Second Street, Consett at about 11.45am yesterday when two men entered the house and stole a handbag containing cash and credit cards.
A spokesperson for Durham Police said: “Two men attended the couple’s home portraying to be roofers. After being challenged by one of the occupants, a man stole a handbag and ran from the address.”
A Renault Clio which was believed to be linked to the burglary was intercepted by the roads policing unit later in the day after a short pursuit at Langley Park.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of burglary. The 24-year-old man was also wanted on suspicion of assault, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent (TWOC) and is alleged to be a disqualified driver.
The front seat passenger, a 31-year-old man, was also arrested for burglary and was wanted on suspicion of a second burglary which happened at St. Bede’s Close, Durham, on January 20.
Both men are currently in custody.
