THE gas safety issues which led a council to take enforcement action against a kebab shop have been resolved.

Best Kebab One in Bishop Auckland was temporarily closed following a visit by Durham Police, Durham County Council and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service on Saturday.

Earlier this week, on Facebook, Durham Police’s harm reduction unit cited “numerous health and safety concerns,” prompting much speculation over the cause. But yesterday the council confirmed the enforcement action was due to an issue with the gas supply.

Michael Yeadon, health protection manager at Durham County Council, said: “The gas safety issues identified on Saturday have now been addressed, and we will continue to monitor compliance at the premises.”

The harm reduction unit also confirmed that the concerns raised by the council had been rectified. On Facebook, a spokesperson said the business owner was now working with the Durham Police Licensing Unit.

The Facebook post also emphasised that none of the concerns raised related to animals. This followed confusion surrounding its earlier post referring to the council’s occupational safety and animal health team.

“The council department that visited are named ‘occupational safety and animal health’ and cover a wide range of duties.”
