ONE of the motorcyclists who competed in a race which left 12 people injured – three of them seriously - has tweeted an apology.

Two crashes took place at Oliver’s Mount road-race track near Scarborough on Sunday, leaving 12 spectators hurt.

A motorcyclist collided into six spectators at around 10.40am, before a second rider crashed through a fence three hours later, hurting himself and spectators.

North Yorkshire Police say three people were left with serious injuries, and were airlifted to hospital.

Two riders were treated at the scene. Two air ambulances and three road ambulances were called to the circuit and the rider was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

Motorcyclist Jamie Coward later tweeted: “Really sorry to spectators involved in my accident today, there was nothing I could have done. I’m very upset and shaken after what’s happened.”

Racing for the day was later cancelled. The organisers stated: "In view of the seriousness of these incidents and our requirements to call on outside assistance to help with this treatment, we have reluctantly taken the advice of everyone concerned and have decided to cancel the rest of the meeting.

"We sincerely apologise to you all for taking this decision and hope you will understand our difficulties in this unprecedented situation."
