VISITORS to a popular agricultural show were treated to everything from the more traditional favourites to the more spectacular entertainment.

The crowds turned out in force to the 176th Stanhope Show over the weekend and a few heavy showers failed to hamper the event.

Entries were strong in both the agricultural and horticulture and produce sections and the entertainment, which ranged from an extreme mountain bike show to megaslam wrestling, also proved a hit.

Other attractions included the dog agility tests, grand parade, vintage tractors and Walworth Castle’s birds of prey.

Newly appointed show secretary Lisa Johnstone said: “We are very pleased with visitor numbers, especially considering we have had a few sharp showers.

“Some of the attractions have been absolutely spectacular - the motorbikes were amazing and the Cumberland wrestling was also great. We had the world championships for the ladies held here. That brought in a lot of people.”

Mrs Johnstone has only been in the post for fewer than two weeks but she is really impressed with the show.

“I am a fresh pair of eyes,” she added. “I am used to doing shows and I have visited some of the biggest ones.

“I am shadowing the acting secretary at the moment but what has struck me is the diversity of this show. You have to appeal to everybody and this show certainly does just that.

“The crafts in particular were amazing and have been really popular.”

She said: “I certainly have some new ideas I will take to the committee to help take things forward and I hope to promote the show more through social media.

“It has been great and we will start looking at what we can bring to it next year.”
