AN MP is urging the Government to use UK steel when it builds the next generation of British warships.

Simon Clarke, the MP for for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, has held talks with the Minster for Defence Procurement, Harriett Baldwin MP, to discuss the need to use locally sourced materials.

The talks came just hours after the Government announced the publication of its ‘National Shipbuilding Strategy’ which includes plans to build a new generation of warships; including eight Type 26 and at least five Type 31e frigates.

After the meeting, Mr Clarke, who is vice chairman of the of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Steel, said: “The Government’s announcement is welcome news and will provide great opportunities for UK steel manufacturing and shipbuilding. My meeting with the Minister was aimed at understanding how UK steel manufacturers can maximise their competitiveness in the bidding processes for these new warships.

“The Minister provided welcome assurances that the Government will carry out early market engagement and continue to forecast steel requirements for shipbuilding through the UK Government Steel Pipeline.

"This will allow UK steel manufacturers to better plan for the capacity they need to bid more effectively for Government contracts.”
