A CLUB for pensioners is about to call it a day after 30 years because of dwindling membership.

Belmont Community Association Over-60s Club is calling an meeting in Belmont Community Centre, Durham, on Wednesday, July 25, at 6.30pm for 6.45pm, to take the decision to wind up its activities.

Chairman Walter Woodfield, 84, said many of the few remaining members were in their 80s and there was no new blood joining.

The club meets every fortnight for musical entertainment, a talk or a slide show. Until last year, it used to run trips.

"We need about 100 new members to keep it going,'' said Mr Woodfield. "It is almost certain we will call it a day.

"The other day, we invited a choir to perform. It had 18 members and there were eight of us in the audience.

"At one time, we had about 80 turn up, but the numbers have gradually dropped over the years.

"We are not getting any new members in. It is old age and infirmity. It is too much of a problem to come out.

"There's nothing wrong with the formula of the club. It is tried and tested and has been used for more than 30 years, but you can't go out and force people to join.''

Transport is available for people wanting to attend the meeting. For details, call 0191-375-7099.
